    Marmot

How would you summarize the vision of the brand in a few words? How does the products represent this vision?

In April 1971, students from the University of California at Santa Cruz, Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley, were in the Icefield of Alaska, as part of a glaciology project. It was on a glacier that the idea of a marmot club began.
During this summer and the next two years, Eric and Dave also started making prototypes of down products in their dorms. Their first products were a down vest, a sweater and a parka and, later, three down sleeping bags. The hottest bag, the PIKA (now known as the MCG) was rated at -45 degrees F.

In the winter of 1973, Eric climbed the Grand Teton in Wyoming with Tom Boyce, Colorado. The following spring, Eric and Dave joined Tom in Grand Junction where they rented a 100-year-old stone building near downtown and opened a rental and retail store under the name Marmot Mountain. Works. They taught cross-country skiing in the winter to get by. Thus, in the spring of 1974, the company Marmot was born.

In 1976, another meeting would change Marmot's future when Eric met Joe Tanner of W.L. Gore and associates. Eric was one of the first in the United States to see a new outdoor performance manufacturing concept called Gore-Tex. He was intrigued and, in a few weeks, had sewed prototype sleeping bags using the new Gore-Tex fabric for field testing. He and Dave spent seven nights in a commercial frozen meat bin comparing bags with and without Gore-Tex. They immediately changed everything in line for Gore-Tex fabrications. Today, Marmot is W. L. Gore's oldest client in the world's outdoor market.

Regarding the selection of tents, interior space and comfort are two axes on which rest the design and engineering behind the making of their products. On the side of sleeping bags and clothes, Marmot manufactures products in the most ecological way possible (without promoting it, since it is in keeping with the values of the company). In other words, they were the pioneers in terms of eco-responsibility. See details here: https://www.marmot.com/about-us/people-product-planet.html

Their business philosophy is based on a triple responsibility.

People: Create equitable human working conditions, support social initiatives and foster a multicultural business philosophy.

Product: Produce the best outdoor equipment meeting the expectations of mountain professionals and enthusiasts.

Planet: Producing environmentally friendly products and promoting a global ecological awareness.
True to its principles, Marmot has been producing high-quality clothing and technical equipment since 1974 for mountaineers, outdoor enthusiasts and extreme mountaineers. As a company, Marmot is committed to a sensitive and sustainable approach towards all its partners.

What are the flagship product of the brand and why?

The flagship products are mainly their tents, Tungsten and Limelight being two very popular models. Tents (competitors: MSR, TNF) are generally more spacious than those of their competitors while being lighter.

The Cloudbreak in their variety of sleeping bags, as well as the PreCip range, basic waterproof coat and pants at an unmatched price-point.

The PreCip does the work even in the pouring rain. It uses Marmot's exclusive NanoPro waterproof coating. The hood seals well around the face and the elastic straps on each side of the face. Two zippers for underarm ventilation.

This model is a coat to do everything. It is light enough for long climbing and hiking trips, and is well ventilated for high energy activities. The hood rolls if you like to wear a rain hat or if you wear your jacket in town. Large hand pockets can hold keys, a phone and gloves without any problem. It is durable enough for occasional downhill skiing.

What are the novelties of this year?

The Halo 4P / 3 seasons tent offers a comfortable space very comfortable for a family. Unlike its previous versions, the 2018 edition now offers two large vestibules, a more durable tent floor, and larger doors. About 6kg, it is an ideal tent for camping in Sépaq or National Park.

    Footprint included.

Any new technology? How do they work?

    - Evodry, recycled nylon, DWR integrated in the fiber and therefore very durable. Decrease in the use of water in garment making (enviro-counscious)
    - DWR C4, less durable than C8, but also less damaging to the environment
    - Plastic bottle recycling program in Haiti to make recycled polyester

Does the flagship product has been modified?

    In the tents:

    - Light diffusing fabrics
    - The Tungsten tent range is now offered in UL (Ultra light) version and the regular one place is more spacious than before
    - A color code for mounting tents to prevent breakage - the hooks are the same color as the associated metal poles.
